GARAN label generator for Shopify: build the EU durability label in 5 minutes

What a GARAN label generator has to produce under Annex II of Reg. (EU) 2025/1960, how to build the label by hand with a metafield, and how the Capyo app generates it per product before 27 September 2026.

A GARAN label generator takes one input — the number of years of free producer durability guarantee — and outputs the harmonised EU label you must show next to the product image on Shopify. The artwork itself is not yours to design: wording, colours and layout are fixed in Annex II of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960, so a compliant generator fills in the duration and nothing else. For most Shopify stores that means either a small metafield build or an app that renders the label per product; the manual path is below, the app path takes about five minutes.

What a compliant GARAN label generator must output

Three inputs, one fixed template.

InputWhere it comes fromNotes
Duration in yearsThe producer’s free commercial guaranteeOnly values longer than 2 years qualify
The Annex II artworkOfficial regulation fileNever redraw, recolour or translate
PlacementNext to the product imageOn the product page, before purchase

Anything else the generator emits — a shortened notice, a badge you designed, a “from 3 years” claim the producer does not make — is a non-compliant label. The regulation is explicit: the design is harmonised, so a different-looking mark counts as no mark at all.

The label is not the notice

The two are confused in almost every store we check. The notice (Annex I) is a static, store-wide reminder of the two-year legal guarantee. The GARAN label (Annex II) is per product and only exists where a producer gives a free durability guarantee longer than two years. Most stores need the notice and only a few products need the label. See the GARAN label explained for the full split.

Route 1 — generate the label with a metafield

If you want to build it yourself, the generator is a metafield plus the official file.

  1. Confirm the duration. Ask the producer, not the packaging: the free commercial guarantee must be longer than two years for the label to apply at all.
  2. Download the official Annex II artwork from EUR-Lex or the Commission’s page for Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960. Do not recreate it.
  3. Create a product metafield in Shopify: namespace garan, key duration_years, type single line text. Fill it for every qualifying product.
  4. Render in the theme. In the product template, output the artwork where the duration is set, next to the product image, and output nothing when it is empty. One if per product keeps the label off products that have no qualifying guarantee.
  5. Repeat per storefront language. The artwork is language-neutral — one file serves all 24 official languages — but surrounding text in your theme is not.

The cost of this route is maintenance: every new product needs the metafield filled, every theme edit risks losing the snippet, and a Commission revision of the file has to be applied by hand across your catalog.

Route 2 — let the app generate it

Capyo stores the producer guarantee per product and renders the official artwork with the right duration, so the generator step disappears from your workflow.

  1. Install the app and set the guarantee duration on the products that have one.
  2. The label renders from the official Annex II file — no redraw, correct placement next to the image.
  3. The same run shows the Annex I notice store-wide in every language you sell in.
  4. Paste a product URL into the free EU guarantee label check to confirm the notice and the label are actually found on the page.

That last step matters: a label generated but not visible on the product page is not compliant, and the checker reads the page the shopper gets, not your theme settings.

Deadline: 27 September 2026

The obligation has applied to goods sold to EU consumers since 27 September 2026. Products with a producer durability guarantee longer than two years need the label; every store selling to EU consumers needs the notice.

The four mistakes a generator makes

  • Generating for every product. No producer guarantee over two years, no label. A label with no qualifying guarantee is a false claim.
  • Changing the artwork. Collapsing it into a badge, recolouring it to match your theme, or adding “lifetime” wording the producer never issued.
  • Inventing the duration. The years on the label must match the producer’s written commercial guarantee exactly.
  • Hiding it in a tab or a footer. Placement is next to the product image, before purchase.

Do you need the label at all?

Run the check first. Paste a product URL into the free tool, see which of the two marks are found, and only generate what is missing. Stores without any qualifying product need the notice only — the cheaper fix.

Can I design my own GARAN label?

No. The wording, colours and layout are fixed in Annex II of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960. A generator may fill in the duration, but the artwork itself must be the official file — a redrawn mark counts as no mark.

What does a GARAN label generator need as input?

One real number: the years of free producer durability guarantee, which must be longer than two years. Everything else — artwork, placement, language handling — comes from the regulation and your storefront.

Does every Shopify product need a GARAN label?

No. The label applies only where a producer offers a free commercial guarantee of durability longer than two years. Products without one need only the harmonised legal guarantee notice, which is store-wide and static.

Is the GARAN label the same as the EU guarantee notice?

No. The notice (Annex I) reminds every EU shopper of the two-year legal guarantee and appears before purchase. The GARAN label (Annex II) sits next to the product image and states the durability guarantee years for that product.

How do I check whether my label is visible to shoppers?

Paste a public product URL into the free EU guarantee label check. It reads the page a shopper receives and reports whether the notice and the GARAN label are found — a label that exists only in your theme settings but not on the rendered page does not count.
