Add the EU guarantee notice and GARAN label to Shopify: theme, metafield or app?

Step by step: show the harmonised legal-guarantee notice and the GARAN label on Shopify before 27 September 2026 — by hand with a theme snippet and a metafield, or with an app, plus a warning-letter checklist.

Published September 23, 2026 · 6 min read

From 27 September 2026, Shopify stores selling goods to EU consumers must show the harmonised legal-guarantee notice and — where a producer offers a free durability guarantee longer than two years — the GARAN label. Shopify ships neither natively. This guide compares the three ways to add them: a theme snippet, a metafield solution, and an app.

The short version: the notice is store-wide and static, so a theme snippet is enough. The GARAN label is per product, so it needs a metafield per product or an app that manages it. In a hurry, use an app; to build it yourself, the integration is below.

Deadline

27 September 2026

Legal basis

Reg. (EU) 2025/1960, Annexes I + II

By hand

1–2 h, redone on every theme

With an app

about 5 min

What is required — treat notice and label separately

Two marks, two triggers. Confusing them means building the wrong thing.

So the notice is a static, store-wide element. The label is per product and needs data.

Route 1 — a theme snippet for the notice

This is the easy part, and for the notice a snippet is enough.

  1. Download the official artwork in the right language from the Commission (vector files from the implementing regulation).
  2. In Shopify → Online Store → Themes → Edit code, create a section or a snippet.
  3. Upload the artwork as an asset and output it in product.liquid (or the product template) under the buy button, plus one line in the footer.
  4. For each language you sell in, add the right file and gate the output on request.locale.

The artwork cannot be changed

The design, colours and wording are fixed by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960. A redrawn or collapsed notice counts as no notice. Use only the official file.

The downside: every theme change means redoing it, and a Commission translation revision would have to be applied by hand.

Route 2 — a metafield for the GARAN label

The label belongs to the product, so it goes on the product.

  1. In Shopify → Settings → Custom data → Products, create a metafield, for example custom.guarantee_years (integer) and optionally custom.guarantee_producer.
  2. Output it in the product template with Liquid — only if the value is greater than 2:
    {% if product.metafields.custom.guarantee_years > 2 %}
      <img src="{{ 'garan-label.jpg' | asset_url }}"
           alt="Producer guarantee {{ product.metafields.custom.guarantee_years }} years">
    {% endif %}
  3. Draw the years into the field Annex II reserves on the official artwork. Depending on the template that field is editable, or the duration must be positioned with CSS.
  4. Fill the values for every qualifying product — by CSV import on large catalogues.

Important: set the metafield only where a free producer guarantee longer than two years covers the whole product. A misplaced label is a false claim.

Route 3 — an app

An app such as EU Guarantee Label & GARAN combines both routes: the notice as a theme extension, the label per product with its duration, in all 24 languages, without theme code. Setup takes about five minutes and there is a free plan. The detailed walkthrough is in the install guide.

Which route for whom:

  • Notice only (most stores): the theme snippet is enough.
  • A few products with a long guarantee: the metafield solution is workable.
  • Many products, several languages, warning-letter risk: an app, because the data and the language versions otherwise need continuous upkeep.

Warning-letter checklist

In Germany, competitors and associations can send warning letters (Abmahnung) for missing mandatory information. Tick these off before the date:

Check before 27 September 2026

  • Does the store sell physical goods to EU consumers? — pure B2B shops, services and digital products are out of scope
  • Notice visible on the product page — checked in a private window, not only in the theme editor
  • Notice in the footer or on the way to checkout — it must be perceivable before the contract is concluded
  • Artwork embedded unaltered — not redrawn, not collapsed, not recoloured
  • Products with a producer guarantee over 2 years listed — furniture, tools, appliances and outdoor gear are the usual candidates
  • GARAN label set only where it applies — free, from the producer, over 2 years, whole product
  • Every language you sell in covered — the notice must appear in the shopper’s language
  • Environmental claims reviewed — the same directive bans "eco-friendly", "climate neutral" without proof
  • Dated proof saved — what was live, and when

Conclusion

The notice is easy; the label is data management. Whoever integrates both cleanly before 27 September meets the deadline calmly. Whoever does nothing shows no compliant label on the day — and that is visible to anyone who checks.

Read next: what changes on 27 September 2026 and the GARAN label in detail.

Is the legal-guarantee notice alone enough?

For most stores, yes. The notice is mandatory for every good sold to EU consumers. The GARAN label is only needed for products with a free producer guarantee longer than two years.

Can I just store the GARAN label in an image metafield?

Technically an image metafield per product is enough. You then have to keep the duration per product accurate, use the official artwork, and show it only on qualifying products.

Does the notice have to exist in every language?

Yes, in the language of the storefront in question. The Commission publishes all 24 official languages; a home-made translation is not allowed.

Can I collapse the legal-guarantee notice?

No. Unlike the GARAN label, which may be shown nested, the notice must be fully visible and clearly perceivable before the purchase.

What is the risk of omitting it?

Enforcement is national. In Germany competitors and associations can send warning letters; elsewhere fines that scale with turnover are possible. This guide is not legal advice.
